Common health issues of popular dog breeds
Bringing home a cute puppy? Be aware of the common health issues that your pet may face, so that you don’t panic when your vet tells you about the issue one fine day!
Obesity is a common health issue in Labradors. Lack of regular exercise leads to weight gain, which increases the risk of joint disease.
They are also genetically prone to elbow dysplasia.
Older German Shepherds are vulnerable to hereditary hip dysplasia and arthritis.
This leads to problems in walking, which has no cure.
The most common hereditary issue in Dalmatians is deafness.
They also develop kidney/bladder stones, which needs surgery.
Epilepsy is more common in Beagles. The brain disorder leads to seizures.
There’s no cure for Epilepsy, but the seizures can be controlled by medication.
Though Pugs live a longer life when compared to other breeds, they are prone to become overweight and eye problems. Breathing problems are common in Pugs and it leads to snoring at night.
Extremely hot or cold temperatures will never suit them.
Boxers are prone to cancer. They do get heart-related and thyroid problems.
Cancer in Boxer is treatable if detected early.
Dental problems, eyesight issues and hair-loss are common in Pomeranians.
Abnormal low blood sugar level affects nervous system and leads to brain damage.
Dachshunds are at higher risk for spinal disk problems, as they have long bodies.
Prone to back injuries.
When you can believe all this to be true, your pet may not necessarily get any of these issues and can live a healthy life.
Pets banned in India!

While it may be fascinating to see videos of people sharing their homes with wild animals, it is not wise to keep them. By wild animals we don’t mean a ferocious lion or cheetah! There are a lot of exotic pets and species of endangered animals that are listed as “banned pets” in India. While you may think owning a parrot or a tortoise is harmless, keeping them as pets is not just unethical but illegal, and can land you in jail.
Here are a few pets that are banned in India.
Keeping birds in captivity is cruel – but a lot of us believe a bird is a hassle-free pet to have. Birds like Rose Ringed Parakeet, Alexandrine Parakeet, Red Munia and Jungle Maina are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. Even the African grey parrot, Blue-throated Macaw and Yellow-crested Cockatoo are protected from international commercial trade under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Tortoise and turtles
Some species of tortoise and turtles are not legal to own in India. Since most people can’t differentiate between kinds of tortoise, it’s easy to get misled into buying or owning an endangered species. The Indian Star Tortoise and the Red Ear Slider are among a few types of reptiles that are unsuitable for rearing in an apartment space, and illegal to own.
India might be known for snake charmers but it is illegal to own any native wildlife snake species here. It is very important not to support any illegal trade as many of these animals are taken from the wild and a lot of them die in the process.
Monkeys, like other wild animals, can’t be kept and trained for entertainment purposes in India under Section 22 (ii), PCA Act 1960.
10 Foods you should never feed your pets
Love your pet? Make sure your pet does not eat all these:
(Moderate use fine)
(Small serving okay)
Wishing your pet a long and healthy life!
Love your dog? Really?
You must know what’s right for them by showing your love and proper care.
Dogs repeat behaviors that give results they want. They are capable of understanding what’s not favorable to them.
Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend. So, humans should first get trained on how to treat dogs.
10 Tips to keep your dog happy and healthy!
Never keep your grown-up dog tied. Give him freedom to roam around the house.
Grown-up dogs need food twice a day. Begging for food is a natural habit for dogs. They want to keep eating all the time. Never share your food with your pet on the dining table. If you practice that habit, your pet may reach a level of barking at you demanding food.
Never give him food which he is not supposed to eat (Read our blog on “10 Foods you should never feed your dogs”). Love doesn’t mean you keep feeding him.
3 CHEWING & BITING
Puppies want to be busy chewing and biting everything around. Chewing toys will prevent your puppy from biting any harmful object that he can find.
Get 4 to 5 good quality, hygienic chewing toys. Keep changing the toy every day, as your puppy may not like the same toy to chew all the time. Correct them by a firm “NO”. Offer chewing treats.
Always give your pet purified water that you drink. Keep enough water in the bowl. If not, he may drink water from leaking pipes and toilet bowls. If you bathe him with purified water, you’re one more step ahead. Through contaminated water your pet gets infected. Dehydration can be dangerous for your dog. Sunken eyes, dry mouth and loss of appetite are the symptoms that need vet’s attention quickly.
Regular grooming – Bathing, cleaning, and nail-clipping regularly is a must. Comb regularly to keep him shining and healthy. Trim his nails regularly. Overgrown nails are a big discomfort and prone to break. Scratching with long nails will make his wounds bigger. You may even shave his hair completely (dogs with long, bushy hair) during summer to get rid of fleas and identify burns and skin infections.
6 PLACE TO REST
Assign your dog a clean and hygienic place to rest. Give him a soft bed that will make him comfortable to rest his bones and joints.
Make him feel you’re protecting him and treating him well like your child. When dogs sleep on the floor, they get infected fast, especially through floor cleaners.
Neutering your dog will help him in many ways in terms of reduced infection, aggression and bad behaviors. But it has its own disadvantages depending upon the health condition of your dog. Here, check with your vet.
8 TOILET BEHAVIORS
Your pet’s inappropriate toileting inside home will upset you. You don’t need to be a professional trainer to correct this habit. If you find it tough to take him outside every time, with a few days of training, you may identify a toilet inside home.
Once trained well, he will be disciplined to go only inside the toilet. Training and teaching habits are for puppies. Grown up pets won’t mend ways that easily.
Make sure to take your dog to a vet for vaccinations as per schedule recommended. Keep the vaccination record handy in a book and in your phone, as well. Vaccinations help your dog keep a healthy immune system and protect your dog from highly infectious diseases. Missing vaccinations may cost even life – That of your pet or humans.
10 A GOOD COMPANION – YOU!
Your pet expects you to be beside him always, though not possible. But, never leave him alone for a long time. Beating and hitting your dog will lead to bad behavioral issues (for both).
Your pet has a shorter life than you. He returns your love and care a hundred times more. Your real care and love will make you the best friend for your lovely dog!
